DeepL Translate for TYPO3: Development update March 2024

The DeepL Translate extension for TYPO3 has been in the summer 2023 Early Access Program as version 4 for TYPO3 11 and 12 LTS. In December 2023 web-vision had published a development outlook and roadmap for the first months of 2024. We take a look at the current status of developments.

Early Access program nears 50 partners

Since summer 2023, the DeepL Translate extension for TYPO3 has been available in version 4 for TYPO3 v11 and 12 LTS. Since then, around 50 partners have decided to partner with web-vision. The partners come primarily from TYPO3 agencies, industrial companies, universities and organizations from the public sector.

They play an important role in ensuring the further development of the DeepL Translate extension for TYPO3 and the creation of new functions.

We at web-vision would like to take this opportunity to thank all our partners for their trust, their participation in the development and the numerous feedback.

DeepL Asset Translate: Translations for images, documents and files

With DeepL Translate for TYPO3, it has always been possible to fully automatically translate embedded documents or images within a content element. This meant that alt texts, title texts or image captions in translated content were automatically translated with DeepL.

The new add-on DeepL Asset Translate now adds new functions to TYPO3's Filelist module to automatically translatemeta data of files for alternative languages with DeepL. Even if content elements on pages are no longer translated with DeepL during translation, TYPO3 can fall back on the already translated meta data of the files. The translation using DeepL Asset Translate thus conserves the available DeepL API contingent.

DeepL Bulk Translate: bulk translations of pages and content elements

The automatic mass translation of pages or entire page trees has so far been one of the most requested functions for the DeepL Translate extension for TYPO3.

With the now available developer preview version of mass translation, this wish can now be fulfilled via the context menu in the TYPO3 page tree. In a submenu of the context menu, it is possible to either pre-number a single page or the page including the subpages below it recursively for mass translation.

The configurable scheduler then processes the pages marked for mass translation asynchronously in configurable batches, intervals and at any time. The asynchronous processing is intended to ensure that the DeepL API or your own server is not overloaded and that the translation process can also take place outside of regular working hours.

New DeepL Translate functions in the TYPO3 demo instance & screencasts

If you would like to test the new functions DeepL Asset Translate and DeepL Bulk Translate for yourself without becoming an Early Access Partner or installing the extensions yourself, you can register free of charge for the DeepL Translate demo site and gain immediate access to the TYPO3 test instance.

In the test instance, individual DeepL pages have been equipped with user rights for the DeepL functions. For security reasons, however, the demo installation is excluded from indexing by search services such as Google and resets itself every hour on the hour.

Furthermore, two screencasts for the new functions are available on the web-vision channel on YouTube.

Switch to Composer Vendor Bundles for add-ons

As an early access partner of DeepL Translate, you usually receive the installation option via Composer. In addition, partners can request access to the relevant GitHub repositories or installable extension packages as ZIP files. For installation via Composer, partners receive project-specific access to the DeepL Translate code via our partner packagist.com.

The first add-on to be released was the additional extension "Enable Translated Content", which allows you to publish all translated content elements in the TYPO3 backend with one click without having to laboriously activate them individually.

From March 2024, all early access partners will now receive access to the DeepL Translate Vendor Bundle, which automatically gives them access to the currently available and new add-ons. Partners can use their individual project token and the Packagist browser URL to view the packages available to them.
